The Life Cycle Of An Axolotl
Do you want to know about the Ambystoma Mexicanum also known as the Axolotl life cycle? Here’s how it starts.
First of all the mother axolotl lays about 400 – 100 eggs. Those little eggs are made of transparent jelly liquid. When the embryo (the little ball inside the liquid) beans it takes about 14 to 21 days for the egg to hatch.
The baby axolotls have hatched into Larvae, larvae are very alike to tadpoles. These larvae have feathery gills that they breathe out of. These creatures are like under water acrobats that glide through the water with grace. The larvae grow legs and a tail after about 3 months, then they grow into young adults.
Now the Larvae are young adults. These axolotls can be on land for at least an hour, then they go back to the water. Axolotls live under water in still water lakes. Axolotls are amphibians wich means their cold blooded vertebrates.
Axolotls lay their eggs in freshwater they look like babies for their whole life! Axolotls can regrow their body. If an Axolotl loses a limb it can regrow / regenerate it in less then 3 weeks. The regrows perfectly without any scarring.
Axolotls don’t go through metamorphosis so they stay young. Axolotls live for about 5 – 6 years but 15 in captivity.
The axolotls are now adults and if a female they can lay eggs and the cycle starts again!
